COT:

I should have more fittingly called today’s workout ‘throwing rocks’ because it would have beautifully tied into this COT.A couple days ago my oldest threw a rock at a neighbor kid. I was inside showering off the weeds and grass from yard work at the time and didn’t see what occurred. When my oldest came it to tell me what happened, tearful and exuding shame for what she’d done, I only had 1 side of the story. Then my wife walked in and basically told a nearly identical tale.Taking them both at their word, I gathered them up and marched back across the freshly cut lawn to the neighbor’s garage to apologize again to the kid and dad.As I watched the ‘supposed’ victim accept the apology and play/run/smile as our kid was offering it, I silently realized that I didn’t have the whole picture. But. I kept quiet and took my family home from the fuming parents without adding more fuel to their fire.Once the wife and I had the kids in bed and could finally talk, I realized that I could have done a better job defending my child’s reputation and getting a better picture of what actually happened.  As we all know, children are not always angels and have the magic ability to turn crying on and off at the drop of a hat.I’m not justifying my kid’s actions, and she definitely was in the wrong, but merely reminding you of our obligation to first protect and stand up for our own blood because ‘family over everything’. And secondly, my grandfather always said, “there are two sides to every story, and then there’s the truth.” So, make sure to get the whole picture before jumping to a conclusion.
