I am currently reading the book Do Hard Things by Steve Magness. The chapter I just finished was all about the importance and power of having a ritual before doing something you are either nervous about, unwilling to, or thinking will be difficult to do.The ‘ritual’ is something you can control, know about, and help center you for the upcoming task. By knowing you have ‘control’ over some aspect of what’s about to happen, you perceive less helplessness in the situation, and therefore are more likely to create a more positive outcome by blocking out fear of the unknown. Think of it like a batter doing his warm-up before stepping into the batter’s box: three arm circles with the baseball bat, tapping the dirt off of each shoe, and readjusting his ball cap. The small ritual of preparing to enter the batters box allows him to take some control over the situation he will soon be in of not knowing what pitches will be thrown his way.The same can apply for getting up to do F3 workouts in the morning. Alarm goes off, take a shit, fill up your water bottle, eat a small snack, and head to the workout. You may have no idea what type of pain or pleasure the workout may hold, but you got out of bed and got yourself there by knowing you had control over your morning ritual.
