At a recent Ohio Bailiff’s Association conference, I got to hear a former Navy Seal, Jon Sanchez, speak. One story stuck with me, from his time in Seal Training. He was the only Officer going through training at the time and it was during “Hell Week”, which went from Sunday to Friday. Seal training is one of the most difficult challenges as it is, so this particular week weeded out all but the best, physically and mentally. Each man had a helmet that they painted green, with their name on it, and these were all lined up on the ground. Officer’s helmets were placed in front of the others and were marked with a white stripe down the middle. While training, Sanchez recalled hearing a pinging sound coming from the area that the helmets were set. After the day was over, he found that his helmet had been kicked down the asphalt and the paint had been chipped and scratched. He had to repaint it during the night, so it was flawless by morning. During Hell Week, they did not have much time to sleep and this caused him to get little to no sleep at all. This continued each day, as the Navy was trying break him. By mid-week, he had become so sleep deprived that he was about to give up. At the end of the fourth day, as he grabbed his chipped helmet for another time, the other men in the training presented him with a freshly painted helmet and told him they had 11 more ready. They had broken in to the supply room and taken the extra helmets. This act by his fellow trainees gave him inspiration and he went on to become 1 of 14, out of 140, that successfully completed the training.
