Ronald Reagan had his second summit with Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1986.  The US and Soviets were in the midst of trying to reach an agreement to scale down their nuclear arsenals.  Gorbachev made a hard play to get Reagan to give up his Strategic Defense Initiative program as part of the negotiations.  Reagan flat out refused, and abruptly left the summit.  He was roundly criticized by the US press upon returning home.   A year later he said the most iconic six words of his presidency, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”  Within a couple years, the Cold War was over, and the USSR dissolved.  Reagan’s leaving Reykjavik the way he did has been widely credited as the first step towards ending the Cold War.  The point?  Even if it might now initially appear to be going your way, if you truly believe in something, stick to your guns!
