COT:

I took care of a 54 yr old patient this past week who was difficult to deal with. He was a meth and fentanyl addict who was in the hospital for a surgical procedure due to infection. He was detoxing hard, to put it lightly. He went through a range of tactics to try to get more medications from me. First he tried to be my friend….then, when that didn’t work, he tried to intimidate….then he ignored me…..then he tried to just look and act sad. This man is the same age as many of us in this group, but is leading a very different life. The power of addiction is real; it caused a grown man to fake tears in front of another grown man just to get a fix of something more than the very heavy medications we were already giving him. I had a difficult time not being disgusted by the guy, and a big part of me wanted to just ‘write him off’ and get through the shift. It certainly would have been easier for me to do so. I dug deep and I tried to sympathize with him and offer a compassionate ear to hear about his problems. I was taking care of him for multiple nights, so I had many interactions with him. Sometimes the conversations were beneficial and honest; other times I could tell he was trying to manipulate me; and sometimes he was just lashing out and being a dick. These patients in particular are the most difficult to care for. It’s tough to be Christ-like and offer compassion to someone who is either trying to manipulate you, and threatening physical violence or legal action against you for doing your job. Ultimately I am glad I made the effort to show him I cared, and it made me think about those in my life who are struggling with varying degrees of chemical dependency. Check in with those in your circle who may be dealing with dependency issues- whether it be alcohol, prescription drugs or worse….let people know they are cared for and you are thinking about them. Offer support without judgement. No one checks in to rehab because someone else MADE them do it. It has to be a choice. I hope you all have an awesome week. Thank you for listening to my Ted-talk.
