COT:

Give grace when the opportunity presents itself. Specifically, I shared a story about a new coworker who is having a really hard time with her orientation to nursing….the other staff nurses are not setting her up for success and constantly discussing her shortcomings behind her back. I got sick of it this week. This nurse was not clocked in yet, so I took the opportunity to call everyone out for being so negative. I spoke about the negativity I had seen and heard from people, without specifically naming any of them….then I asked them, “has anyone helped support her in this? Or are we all just talking shit about what she’s doing wrong? She’s definitely not going to be successful with everyone talking about how bad she is.” The rest of the morning people were going out of their way to be more supportive rather than destructive when interacting with the newbie. Rather than breaking people down and focusing on their failings; notice something positive about their performance instead. If you don’t have anything productive to say then just keep it quiet. What good is it going to do to tell someone they suck? What good will come from talking ill behind someone’s back? If there is a problem with someone’s performance, focus on support and building them up, rather than tearing them down. That means, sometimes it might be inconvenient for us to go out of our way to offer help. In those instances, be the leaders we are meant to be and lift people up. Offer grace and compassion, rather than negativity and defeat.
