My message for today is pay it forward. The parish that I grew up at (St. Mary’s in downtown Akron) used to have coffee and donuts after the 9 o’clock Mass every Sunday. My family would go to the parish hall every week after Mass and we would often stay for an hour or two just visiting with other families. My mom recently told me that when the parish first started weekly coffee and donuts, we would never go because my parents felt they couldn’t afford it. My Aunt Barb and Uncle Jerry (may they rest in peace) used to invite us to join each week, but my parents would always decline without saying why. One week, my Uncle Jerry invited us again and said that he would pay. We rarely missed a week after that because my parents realized what a gift it was to grow in that community. To this day, we have many close friends from that community, including my wife! I am amazed at how abundantly my family has been blessed over all these years by that one simple act of kindness from my Aunt and Uncle. There is no knowing how God can work through our actions! My challenge for each of us is to look for opportunities to jump in and help others. I pray that we may all learn to be spontaneously generous in this way.
It was a pleasure leading you all today!
Peace – JonBoy
