COT:
I am in the process of reading a book called Do Hard Things by Steve Magness. One of the things he talks about is a phenomenon called Learned Helplessness. Awhile back scientists did an experiment where they took some dogs and one set they shocked but gave them a way to stop the shocks. The dogs quickly figured out to stop themselves from getting shocked. Another set they shocked but gave them no way to stop the shocks, this set quickly gave up trying and just sat and took it. The next experiment put those same dogs in a cage with a small divider in between two sections. One section they got shocked in but by leaping over the divider into other section they were safe. The dogs in previous experiment that could stop the shocks figured out how to save themselves. The other set would just cower in the corner resigned to their fate and wouldn’t even try to save themselves. The had Learned Helplessness, we can sometimes experience this in our own lives to varying degrees. We resign ourselves to “this is just how it is” and give up trying to save ourselves. I feel that men of faith always have the way to save themselves by being men of faith. Thanks for opportunity to lead and great conversation at coffee today with shoutout to @flyguy for providing the refreshments.
