COT:
My wife and I recently went on a trip to the West coast, Monterey Bay California. Kim ran the marathon and I ran (and walked) the 21 mile race on highway 1 through Big Sur. The scenery was amazing. It was an emotional experience. I brought my headphones to listen to my music, and I don’t think I listened to more than a few songs throughout the entire 4 hours of the race. I didn’t need to. It was so surreal. We had such an awesome trip and got to check Big Sur off Kim’s running bucket list. I’m so grateful I was able to take part.I’m turning 40 this weekend, and I am appreciative of my health, and my ability to keep showing up and being part of this group, whatever form of modification that might sometimes take. I think even a year ago, I would have been very frustrated with my time at the Big Sur race. I would have continued to dwell on the missed training days, the injury setbacks, and the fact that I’m not as fast as I used to be. Lately, though, I have been trying to appreciate what I have and what I CAN contribute. I may not be the fastest or the strongest anymore, but I can still contribute. Not to compare ourselves to others, but men in this group can lift, squat, jump and run more than most men at our respective ages. That’s pretty neat!
