The Rumble in the Jungle was 50 years ago today, October 30th 1974. Muhammad Ali beat George Forman using the now infamous technique/strategy known as the rope a dope. When I think of Ali the word perseverance comes to mind. Born into modest means, wins gold in the 1960 Olympics, then on to win the heavyweight title of the world. In a number controversial and very unpopular moves early in his career he converted to Islam, changed his name and later was stripped of his title when refusing entry into the military when drafted during the Vietnam war. After being unable to fight for 4 year during his athletic prime he was permitted to climb back into the ring. He regained the world title when few gave him much of a chance against the younger and hard hitting Forman. After his boxing career ended he spent much of his life dedicated to humanitarian, philanthropic endeavors and a advocate for peace. He became a revered and adored figure allover the world including many of his former critics. Love him or hate him the man was true to his own beliefs and is the epitome of perseverance.
