1/13/1982 Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac, after leaving Washington National (now Reagan National), and clipping the 14th St. Bridge (now the Arland D. Williams Memorial Bridge). It killed 4 motorists/pedestrians on the bridge, before plunging into the water with 74 passengers and 5 crew members onboard. Only four passengers and one crew member survived. Lenny Skutnik happened to be on his way home from his government job, and stopped to watch the rescue effort. He noticed a lady struggling to grab a rescue line, and struggling to stay alive. He stripped off his shoes and clothes, and immediately jumped in 33 degree water to help. He grabbed Priscilla Tirado, and pulled her to shore, in effect saving her life.
Thirteen days later, President Reagan delivered a State of the Union Address, and introduced the practice of inviting people to the Presidential Gallery for recognition. The first person to gain this recognition was Lenny Skutnik, leading to years of people introduced by presidents being referred to as “Lenny Skutniks”.
This story made me think of this group, and how many men we have who, I’m betting, would be Lenny Skutniks given the chance.
