COT:
I attended a fundraiser last Saturday and was seated next to an older gentleman. After a few minutes of small talk, he asked me if I was in the service. I had told him I did not and he said he was in the Marines, enlisting in 1968. I told him that was one year after my father enlisted and he seemed to perk up a bit. My father never talked to me about his time in the Marines or anything he experienced at Vietnam. I knew at a young age not to bring it up. This gentleman, Art, really opened up to me about his time in the Marines. He shared pictures of him at Camp Pendleton, California, where he was stationed during the war and told me that he even drove tanks. He did not go to Vietnam and he was thankful that he did not. He said a lot of men came back through Camp Pendleton and he could tell they had been through hell.I thanked him for his service and for sharing his experience with me. It made me feel even more proud of my father.
