A bit of a double edged message…
The push to get 5/8 recognized as Victory Day got me to thinking about the WWII generation.  My maternal grandfather in particular.  My great-grandparents migrated to the US from Finland in 1912.  My grandfather, born in 1918 was, I believe the third of eight children.  With only Finn being spoken at home, he got all his English lessons from School, which he attended until seventh grade.  Then, like a lot of people at that time, his parents needed him on the farm.  Bi-lingual, and self taught on the guitar, my grandfather went to war in 1943, and was sent to Japan.  After the war, he had three daughters, settled in Janesville, WI, and worked thirty years at a factory building church furniture.  Upon retirement, which he greatly looked forward to, he fell ill.  He was diagnosed with lung cancer (apparently unfiltered Camels weren’t good for you.  Who knew?).  He passed nine months later.
My message is two-fold.  1. Let us never cease paying our respects to the Greatest Generation.  Their sacrifices allow us the freedoms we enjoy today.  2. While it’s great to save for things on the horizon, don’t forget to enjoy today.  You might be saving for a horizon you never get to.
