Lean into ownership of your failures. In order to use failure as one of your biggest opportunities for growth, you must first take ownership of your role in the situation. It is very easy to place the blame on another person, your environment, an element of the situation, etc. However, in doing so, you become a victim to the failure and it remains just that… regardless if you wiped yourself clean of it in your mind or the minds of others. The reality is you failed. And that is a wonderful thing. It is a catalyst for growth, exploration and learning.A recent example I heard was from Josh Allen after their loss to the Chiefs. He was asked about his tight end’s drop on the last offensive play of the game. Without hesitation, his response was along the lines of “I have to do a better job of getting him the ball in a better placement for him.” He could have easily still played the role of a stand up teammate and give the canned line of “we are all this together and he will make the next one for us” or worse.. could have thrown him under the bus… rather, he didn’t say a THING about his teammate. He reviewed HIS role in the failure…. evaluated what HE could do better…. I don’t believe this was lip service. I believe he has a growth mindset… one that, in part, has made him the leader he is currently and the even better one he will grow to become.
