Look through a different lens – hanging with my nephew Whittaker gave me some perspective. I was doing yard work, collecting lots of firewood at my sister’s house, and the logs I was picking up were ~50-70 lbs. a piece. My little 2 yr old nephew was ‘helping’ Uncle Mike, and he was cute but also slightly underfoot, as I was trying to lift these giant tree trunks. He kept placing smaller branches right where I wanted to put the bigger ones. I was incredibly patient with him as I repeatedly had to ask him to move his stuff so I could put the bigger ones down. We made some fun memories comparing our big muscles as we were flexing our biceps after lifting the tree. I definitely did not get the job done as quickly or efficiently with him being around my feet and trying to help me lift the wheelbarrow to get the lumber to the truck.  My sister kept apologizing for him and telling me she could take him inside if needed. I shrugged it off and Witt and I had a really fun time getting the job done. In perspective, if this was managed at my house, I might not have been as patient with my own children. If they were inclined to help, I might have been more easily annoyed that I wasn’t getting my work done as quickly as I wanted. That has really stuck with me and bothered me quite a bit since the previous weekend – so much so that I have tried to take some extra time with my own kids to make some fun memories. Taking small moments to play a game, or sit on the couch and read a book, or listen to my 8-yr-old’s wild stories about the monsters he is fighting with his action figures in his room. Rather than thinking about all the things on my to-do list, it’s been nice to take a time out and just BE with my children. We are our own worst critics, and I think sometimes that bleeds out to reflect on how we might treat our children as well. It’s easier to be short or to reprimand my own kids, than it is to do it with my little nephew. I need to treat my own kids with the same patience and acknowledgement that I would give for someone else.
