Be there in a patient and emotional support capacity for your pre-teens and teens. They have so many hormones and emotions in play. They are growing so rapidly and every problem seems like the worst, most awful thing that is ruining his/her life! I’ve been having some challenges with my 12yr old daughter lately. Just lots of emotions and I can’t always fix the issue that’s causing the upset. Even when I do ‘fix’ it, we are still upset about it! We’ve taken to having some time to allow the emotions to run….to allow the support to be there….and eventually, if there is still too much to handle at the moment, taking a break in her room until she can function without derailing whatever plans the family has for the evening. If the crying and/or complaining is taking up too much time then I’ve been turning to some ways to help support her without yelling or telling her to cut it out. My latest thing I’ve been saying a lot lately: “You are allowed to be upset, and to have your emotions. I’m here if you need to talk, or if you need a hug. You are not allowed to continue to make the rest of the house have to be part of your upset.” It seems to be working pretty well so far. She’s able to take the time she needs, and the rest of the evening doesn’t come to a screeching halt. Check in with your pre-teens and teens! They got a lot going on!
